South Africa has turned out in record numbers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The latest Marvel blockbuster has officially become the biggest opening weekend release in South African cinema history, grossing more than R44 million and overtaking the previous record set by Avengers: Endgame.
The milestone was confirmed by Sony Pictures South Africa, with the film drawing packed cinemas and sold-out screenings across the country during its opening weekend.
The local success mirrors the film's incredible global performance. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is estimated to have earned more than $932 million worldwide in its opening weekend, making it one of the biggest global box office debuts of all time.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film marks Tom Holland's return as Peter Parker following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. With the world having forgotten Peter Parker's identity, Brand New Day introduces a fresh chapter for the iconic superhero while expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film's record-breaking opening also challenges recent conversations around superhero fatigue, proving that audiences are still willing to fill cinemas when a major event film arrives.
